There is nothing better than watching the sunset on Kauai. We rarely miss a sunset when we’re visiting, and we’ve identified some of the best places to watch. We’ve divided this list into the best spots in the summer (north shore) and the winter (south shore).

Best Summer Spots on the North Shore

#1: Walina Terrace at 1Hanalei
The Walina Terrace at 1Hanalei is our favorite place to watch the sunset. You don’t need a reservation or even a table. Guests gather along the terrace railing as the sun begins to set. You should plan to purchase a cocktail or beverage, and that’s not inexpensive as they cost about $20 each, so this is not a free place to see the sunset. Still, we find it worth it for the sweeping view of Hanalei Bay and Makana (Bali Hai). There also is live music at the Terrace on weekends, which adds to the experience.
To access the Terrace, you can walk from anywhere in Princeville. Alternatively, you can drive and use their valet parking (see our post on best sights on the north shore), which will add a little cost in tips.
#2: Princeville Lookout
Looking for a free spot to catch the sunset? The view from the lookout in Princeville along Ka Haku Road near 1Hanalei is about as good as it gets. There is no parking near the lookout so you’ll need to walk. There is a tiny parking lot at Hideaways Beach nearby, but it’s very hard to find an open spot there. If you’re staying in Princeville, we recommend walking or taking a bike.

#3: Hanalei Beach near the pier
Another great spot that also costs nothing is from Hanalei Beach near the pier. This is among the easiest to do, especially if you’re having dinner in Hanalei. There is plenty of parking at Black Pot Beach, and while crowds may gather, the beach is large enough that you should have no trouble taking great photos.
Best Winter Spots on the South Shore
#1: Poi’pu Beach
Our favorite place to catch the sunset on the south shore is on Poi’pu beach. There is always a crowd gathered to watch the sunset and the hono (Hawaiian green sea turtles) who swim on shore to sleep for the night as the sun begins to set. Don’t be surprised if you see dozens of turtles gather.

#2: Makahu’ena Point in Poi’pu
Another great spot to watch the sunset is Makahu’ena Point. This is the southern most point of Kauai and offers beautiful views of the ocean. Whales are common along the shore here in the winter, and the sunset views are absolutely gorgeous. There are rarely large crowds. To access the point, you can park along the road west near Brennecke or Poi’pu beach and walk there. Or stay at one of the nearby resorts, such as the Point at Poi’pu or even the Grand Hyatt.
#3: The Beach House Restaurant Lawn
The lawn in front of the Beach House restaurant near Lawa’i beach offers another beautiful spot to watch the sunset. There is parking along the road, making it easier to access than Makahu’ena Point. And, if you’d like a cocktail while you watch, the Beach House restaurant opens onto a roped off area on the lawn, serving cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.
