Best Things to Do on the North Shore

Here’s our list for top things to do on the north shore.

Hiking Kalalau to Hanakapia’i

The full 11-mile Kalalau Trail is among the best hikes in the world. To hike it, you need camping permits that are typically booked as much as a year in advance. The first two miles of the trail to the Hanakapia’i Beach are accessible to day hikers without a permit, making this hike our pick for #1 must-do activities on the island. Paddling the Hanalei River

When you need a break from the beach, we recommend you paddle the Hanalei River. You can follow the river toward the ocean and pier or take it inland for some beautiful mountain views. The river follows the road for a good stretch, with taro fields surrounding you. It’s relatively calm with an easy current, especially in the summer. When paddling toward the ocean, you may encounter headwinds, but the current will help in that direction.

Renting a kayak or paddleboard is easy in Hanalei town. We usually use Kayak Hanalei, as they can put you right in the river from their private dock. Kayaks rent for $50 for singles or $75 for doubles for the day, with discounts after 1pm. SUPs rent for $55 per day.

Snorkeling at Tunnels or Anini

Tunnels has always been the best place to snorkel on Kauai. Unfortunately, the massive lagoon has largely been closed to snorkeling under a new state law to protect fisheries. You can still snorkel the reef formation located close to shore, where you’ll see no shortage of underwater life. Entering the water can be tricky, especially during low tide. There are sand channels on the two ends of the reef. We recommend entering from the right side when looking from shore as you’ll then be swimming with the current. The water can range from 3’ to 25’. Stay close to the reef as currents can try to take you out to sea. Keep in mind that during winter months, the surf is too high to snorkel at Tunnels. And on particularly windy days in summer, visibility can be poor.

Anini is another great place to snorkel on the north shore. The lagoon is well protected, offering good visibility. While the reef is not as extensive as Tunnels, you’ll still see good underwater life. And turtles are numerous here. If you want to see turtles on Kauai, Anini is probably the best place.
