Essentials for your Kauai Vacation
Wondering what you might need to pack for your Kauai vacation? We’ve got you covered. Below is our list of key items to bring to ensure you don’t need to waste time or money shopping on the island.
For the Beach
- Swim shirt – best sun protection, especially when snorkeling
- Mineral sunscreen – Hawaii bans sunscreens with Oxybenzone or Octinoxate; don’t trust reef-safe labels, just bring mineral sunscreen with you to Hawaii
- Aloe
- Snorkeling gear – if you plan to snorkel
- Beach canopy
- Beach bag
- Wet wipes
- Ziploc bags
- Cooler bag (if you’re not staying in a vacation rental)
- Sunglasses and a hat
- Consider an underwater camera
For Hiking
- Hiking shoes and socks – We recommend La Sportiva approach shoes for the slippery mud on Kauai’s trails
- Water-proof sandals with good tread, like Tevas or Keens – Better than flip flops for the hot sand at the beach
- Refillable water bottle
- Hiking poles
- Hiking pack or backpack
Better Safe than Sorry
- Medicines, like Benadryl, Pepcid, Advil, Tylenol, and Diarrhea medicine
- Bandaids and first aid
- Sea bands
- Long-sleeved shirt or light sweater, if visiting in the winter – it does cool off at night
Nice to Have
- Deck of cards
- Coffee, so you have some for your first morning
- Bluetooth speaker and charger
- Jeans or long pants if you plan to go horseback riding
Have in your backpack or carry on bag
- Pen or pencil to fill out Hawaii agriculture form – every family must complete a form on the plane before you land in Kauai. Airlines often don’t have pens for passengers to complete the form. So bring a pen with you.
- Swim suit, in case luggage doesn’t arrive
- Sunscreen – put some in a 3 ou refillable container so you’ll have some when you arrive if your checked luggage doesn’t.
- Sandals
What Not to Bring
- Sunscreen with Oxybenzone or Octinoxate
- Beach towels; vacation rentals and hotels will provide them
